Questionnaire Results

The outcome of the results for my questionnaire will heavily influence the overall design and outcome of my magazine. The final product design will ultimately be decided by these results, which I will then follow to distinguish my audiences interpretation of the magazine.

Are You Male or Female? (Total Votes: 13)
Male 6 (46%)
Female 7 (53%)

The results conveyed proved to me that Females are prominent in reading magazines than Males, only by 1 vote though so they are almost equal. Yet, the Electronic/Pop, Dance Music genre is very generalised classification and equally appeals to Males, as it does to Females. For the Front Cover, I should try to create an image which is appropriate for both genders, yet appeals to them both. For the Focal Image on the cover I have come to the decision to use a Young Female on the Front Cover so that, the men are attracted towards her allure and elegance, yet the Women are drawn towards elements of her persona, such as fashion, make-up and glamour.

How Old Are You? (Select an Age Range) (Total Votes: 13)
13 or Under 0 (0%)
14 - 17 9 (69%)
18 - 20 4 (30%)
21 - 24 0 (0%)
25 + 0 (0%)

The results displayed convey to me that the Music genre of Magazine appeals more to that of the younger generation, as opposed to an older generation. This will be the age range I will be aiming my magazine target audience at. The magazine will include contemporary content and current musical influences in which the younger generation can connect with. For the design, it will have to conclude to be very luminous and bold with the combination of bright colours and contemporary design. The magazine should include some of the latest events in which would appeal to the younger generation. These elements should be completed to appeal to the target audience more significantly, so that they are attracted towards the magazine.

What is your Monthly Income? (Total Votes: 11)
£0 - £20 4 (36%)
£21 - £50 4 (36%)
£51 - £100 0 (0%)
£101 + 3 (27%)

With the analysis of Monthly Income, I can examine how much the magazine should be priced at depending on the outcome of the results. With these results, as the income is a prominently low income and because it is mainly the younger generation, it is not expected of them to have a mass income, so the magazine should be reasonably priced so that it is not over-priced and they would be spending a ridiculous amount to purchase it. Also, so that they would want to purchase it because it is not significantly pricey for the genre of magazine which is being promoted.

How Often Do You Purchase Magazines? (Total Votes: 13)
Multiple Times a Week 1 (7%)
Once a Week 3 (23%)
Multiple Times a Month 3 (23%)
Once a Month 1 (7%)
Few Times a Year 4 (30%)
Never 1 (7%)

These results specifically show that, yes more people would purchase a magazine not as often throughout the year, but if we combine the monthly options, and the weekly options, the results become equal, 4 a piece. Therefore showing that there is a significant amount of people who equally purchase a magazine at different points within the year. I can make the decision as to how often I will release a magazine. In my opinion, releasing a seasonal magazine would include too much information, and the magazine would not become as significant within the industry, and would not compile enough customers to purchase it would not be around as significantly as other magazines such as Kerrang! or Q. Yet, if a weekly version of the magazine was released then there would not be enough information included within the content, and the magazine would see itself becoming repetitive. Also, the production of the magazine would be limited as it would only be allowed a week to design, compile the information etc. putting the standard of the magazine at jeopardy. I have decided to create a monthly magazine, so that the audience will become infatuated with the content included, and would let the production of the magazine to work at a steadier pace, and the information for the magazine to be compiled over a longer period so there is much more material included.

Which Would you say is a Reasonable Price to buy a Magazine for?
(Total Votes: 7)
£1 1 (14%)
£2 1 (14%)
£3 4 (57%)
£4+ 1 (14%)

The price of the magazine is dependent upon the Monthly income of the audience, in this case, because the target audience are younger and the expected income is prominently lower than £50 a month, you do not want to price the magazine ludicrously so that it would retract the audiences attention away from the content and the magazine itself. This analysis shows that majority of the audience believe that a reasonable price for the is around "£3" and that is what I will price my magazine at. So that it is within a comfortable price range without taking away the audience attention from the magazine.

Favourite Genre of Music? (Choose 3) (Total Votes: 12)
Note: With this set of results, the decisions and answers were created through a multiple choice basis, so the percentages are different to that of the latter of the results.
Pop 3 (25%)
Rock 5 (41%)
R&B 3 (25%)
Hip/Hop 0 (0%)
Electronic/Pop 3 (25%)
Dance 4 (33%)
Rap 0 (0%)
Pop/Rock 5 (41%)
Alternative 1 (8%)
Indie 3 (25%)
Metal 1 (8%)
Techno/House 1 (8%)
Country 0 (0%)

Combining the results of Pop, Electronic/Pop, and Dance, they become the most voted and therefore the most popular genres of Music, they are the main focus of my Magazine. These genres will play a major influence the styles, designs and colour scheme of the magazine so it will appeal more to the target audience. By using these genres, I can cover a mass amount of material from within the genres, and can also include other genres such as Techno/House, which became the second most popular category.

What Features Attract you to Purchasing a Magazine? (Choose 2)
(Total Votes: 13)
Note: Both this section and the section below have a combined explanation as they interlink with one another.
Headlines 4 (30%)
Pictures 12 (92%)
Exclusive Features 1 (7%)
Advertisements 0 (0%)
Articles 0 (0%)
Exclusive Interviews 2 (15%)
Posters 3 (23%)

What Features do you Dislike in Magazines? (Choose 2)
(Total Votes: 12)
Note: The percentages for this section are also disparate, as they too were also compiled on a multiple choice basis.
Headlines 1 (8%)
Pictures 0 (0%)
Exclusive Features 1 (8%)
Advertisements 10 (83%)
Articles 4 (33%)
Exclusive Interviews 1 (8%)
Posters 1 (8%)

By compiling this information, it makes it a lot clearer to me as to what I should and should not include within the magazine. It shows me what the public like to be included within the magazine, and what antagonizes them about the magazine itself, so it accentuates the flaunts and the flaws of the magazine. For these results specifically I was able to concur that audiences are mostly attracted to Pictures, Headlines, Posters, Exclusive Features & Interviews within the magazine, and are opposed to having advertisements and articles included. This is understandable as when you are reading a magazine, you want to continue you on reading and finding out more material within the magazine, rather than having a random article or advertisement, even though that is how companies, Tv shows etc. receive money and promotion for what they are advertising. Sometimes they can be seen as interesting, but a lot of the time they are significantly irrelevant. For my magazine, I was follow these procedures, and aim not include anything to disrupt the wishes of the audience.

Your Favourite Possible Colour Scheme? (Total Votes: 6)
Yellow, Black & Pink 5 (83%)
Blue, Black & White 1 (16%)
Yellow, Green & Pink 0 (0%)
Purple, Green & Orange 0 (0%)
Purple, Black & White 0 (0%)

For the Colour Scheme, I wanted to choose arrangements in which reflected the genre of Music being conveyed. I came up with colours which worked well together, yet were vibrant and bold. My personal preference of the schemes represented would be Yellow, Black & Pink, as it demonstrates to disclose the genre of Music I am focusing on, whilst appealing to the audience of Men & Women. The colours are bold and vivid too also the colours work well together with the black contrasting the bright and boldness of the yellow & pink, so they can express a positive feel as well as attracting the attention of an on-looker. The colours do not reflect a darker feel in comparison to other magazines such as Kerrang!

Your Possible Front Cover Image? (Total Votes: 10)
Image 1 4 (40%)
Image 2 1 (10%)
Image 3 5 (50%)

The inspiration for the style in which I wanted to create my Front Cover, I found 3 images in which I wanted to re-create and inspire the image I wanted. The Images I found were a Medium Close-Up of Kelly Clarkson, a man positioned standing up straight in a medium-shot, and a Medium-Close Up of Lady GaGa. My favourite images were of the ones of Kelly Clarkson & Lady GaGa, and they were the ones in which received the most votes from people. I found that these images were both very vibrant and astounding, as well as accentuating the artist to the reader in a very unique manor. For my front cover, I will use these images as inspiration in creating my own Front Cover.

Your Favourite Possible Font Styles for Titles?
(Total Votes: 6)
Note: The percentages are different, again because the results were determined on a multiple choice basis.
321 Impact 0 (0%)
Stencil 0 (0%)
Will & Grace 6 (100%)
Lauren Script 5 (83%)
Dirty Headline 0 (0%)

For the Titles within the Magazine, I chose a diverse range of Fonts in which could be featured on Magazine. My 2 favourites are Will & Grace and Lauren Script as they are very opposite and dissimilar so by using one for some Titles and one for others they would contrast and make the Font stand out more to the target audience. The people who voted agreed with my decision and will follow their choice and put these 2 styles on and within the magazine.

Your Favourite Possible Font Style for the Text? (Total Votes: 12)
Georgia 7 (58%)
Cambria 2 (16%)
Itsadzoke 0 (0%)
Sell Your Soul 3 (25%)
Baskerville Old Face 0 (0%)

For the Text styles I wanted to choose fonts which were sleek, yet contrasts to the Title Fonts used for the Magazine cover. I made the decision to choose more stylish fonts so they could contrast whilst following the style of the magazine. The results showed me that the most popular Font is "Georgia", my personal preference for the Text Font.

Your Favourite Possible Magazine Title? (Total Votes: 14)
The Sound 1 (7%)
Paparazzi 13 (92%)
Dirty Pop 0 (0%)
Rhythm Nation 0 (0%)

The results for this specific question in the questionnaire shows that the most popular Magazine Title is "Paparazzi" receiving the majority of the votes. This was my favourite choice as it is a one word name so it strikes the audience with the more memorable factor and because it is short, the name becomes more vivid, appealing and is very distinctive as it is unique. The name title also works because although it does not directly link to Music, it links to Fame, which comes as a factor of music, so it accentuates the magazine to the audience more significantly. I think that also for this genre of Music, you need a name which will become a brand and will become more outstanding within the industry.

Sketches for Double-Page Spread Design

#1

This is the #1 possible design for the double-page spread which may be included within my magazine. The design can be seen as your typical style for a double-page spread. The main headline for the article is positioned across the peak of the right-hand page with the feature elements written below it, which includes covering the entire with text written specifically about the artist being featured. Other elements for the article could include, a smaller version of the Album being promoted (To help boost the publicity for it), a quote from the article enlarged to draw the reader in more, images of the artist from the photo-shoot from the Magazine, or even an advertisement PUG to promote something which either does or does not relate to the exclusive. On the opposing left-hand page for this design specifically, a picture of the artist would be included from a photoshoot in relation to the article, an aspect which would be apart of the promotion of the piece. A quote which would be excluded from the text paralleling the image would be included to attract the attention of the reader more towards the article.

#2

This is design #2 for the double-page spread element of the Magazine. The focal image of the Artist is situated on the far left-hand edge of the page, much like the previous design, whilst the title conveying the Artists name is positioned just above the photograph in large-sized text to help the convey the purpose of the article more significantly to the audience. This text would be positioned in the very upper left-hand corner of the page, so that it is still visible yet there is still room to include other elements of the double-page spread. The 'Headline' of the article on this specific design is situated on the central fold of the page so that it is directly drawn towards it, so the article becomes more apparent to reader. The text which is featured within the article is positioned much further across to the let-hand side of the page so that more information can be included, and the audience will be more attracted into reading the article. Other elements included across the article are images from the correlating photo-shoot and advertisement PUGs. For this design, rather than extracting quotes from the text and positioning them elsewhere across the page, on this one i've decided to use the idea of enlarging specific, core quotes from the article.

#3

This is the final possible design for the Double-page Spread. This time the design has been completely altered and is far more diverse than the 2 prior. The focal image for the article is positioned down the central 3rd of the spread, so the reader is immediately drawn to the image and the article. The correlating 'Headline' for the article takes position in the upper section of the first 2/3 (This would include the Artist's name), in large so that it is more apparent for the reader, much like design #2. For this design, I wanted to explore the ways in which an article can be presented, I decided to place the paralleling content of the article along the left and right-hand sides of the page. This is so that the design is different and so that the audience is not immediately drawn towards the text, also that it splits up the writing rather than being situated in on block paragraph. Some more factors of the magazine's double-page spread which can be used includes, PUGs, much like design #1 a possible album cover to help promote the artist and their work. Also correlating images from the included photo-shoot could also be spread across the page so show different elements of the shoot. I decided for this design to also follow the idea of enlarging a quote from the text, rather than copying and repeating the words in a different style, and also to attract the audiences attention.

Sketches for Contents Page Design

#1
This is the first and the most favourable of my Contents Page designs, as it more versitile from the others, as it features a different layout from the others & is easy to venture around. The 'Title' for the page is situated at the top of the page, and considerably larger than other text featured across the page so it stands out more, with the sub-title of 'Features' located just below, smaller and in a similar style to show continuity across the page. The 'Images' which correlate with a specific story are situated down the central line of the page, whilst the page number is located in the bottom right-hand corner of each image so the story is can be easily found. Whilst the 'Headline' for each major story is placed to the right-hand side of the image, including some information to provide some details of the story to introduce the reader more to the feature. Other story headlines, features & exclusives are positioned along the left-hand side of the page, with the correlating page number down the left-hand side of the 'Headline'. On this design, an 'Exclusive' which is positioned in the bottom right-hand corner of the page could possibly be positioned at the top of the page so it is more noticeable and instead could be replaced with one of the few 'PUGs' which are also featured across the page. The 'Title' logo, for the Front Cover of the Magazine ("Paparazzi") is positioned at the bottom of the page, this is the style in which the 'Title' of the Contents page & sub-title would be styled. Although this design is not overly complicated, it is not confusing either, and is a sleak, bold & easy to navigate design which I think would be ideal for my Magazine as it allows readers to locate what they are looking for, without causing confusion.

#2
This is the second possible design for my Magazine's Contents page, this style emphasizes a much more busy look in comparison to design #1. The 'Title' is positioned in the upper left-hand corner of the page, and is conveyed as the largest piece of text so it is emphasized more to the audience, whilst the 'Sub-title' ("Features") is located directly below in a similar style to the Magazine Title & the Contents Page Title to show continuity throughout the Magazine. Directly to the right of the title is an 'Exclusive PUG', a one off privilege for the Magazine which is advertised in the Content of the magazine. The main contents of the material of the magazine is located in a column along the left-hand side of the page, in a list style, with the 'Headline' for each story portrayed with the correlating page number next to it, on the right hand side. Down the right-hand side of the page are some other main stories of the Magazine, with featured text along with it, to give a partial insight into the story. They are positioned in scattered style across the page, to make the page more busy & interesting for the reader to look at. Located in the bottom left-hand corner of the page is a 'PUG' & the 'Title' of the Magazine. Also included along the bottom of the page is a 'Banner' styled in the same way as the titles of the magazine, this would advertise other elements of the magazine to attract the audiences attention, such as 'Posters'.

#3
This is possible design #3 for the Contents page of my magazine, a style in which accentuates a more compact, busy yet interesting fashion. It features all the elements of a contents page, in a different manner to the other 2, it is easy to navigate around and is a simple yet busy design. Featured across the top 3rd of the page is the 2 main Titles of the page ("Contents" & "Features") Contents, being significantly larger to stress that the page is the content. Then, the word 'Features' is styled in a reciprocal way to the 'Contents' title. The main title of the magazine ("Paparazzi") is positioned in a smaller version in the upper-left hand corner of the page, next to the title to make the name of the magazine more prominent across the magazine. An 'Exclusive' PUG is situated just below this to bring light upon the title of the magazine & the independent feature which is constituted as a one off in the magazine, intriguing the audiences attention more. Along the left-hand side of the page are an organised arrangement of images which correlate with other major headlines in the magazine, along with the headline below the photo & in the bottom right-hand corner of the image is the corresponding page number. Along the paralleling right-hand side of the page is the content of the magazine, which includes various exclusives and headlines featured throughout, with the page number to the right-hand side of the text. On the bottom of the page is a 'banner' which contains & endorses other aspects of the magazine such as 'posters, other exclusives etc.'. Also there are PUGs & a smaller version of the front cover of the magazine. Depending on the selected colour scheme of the magazine, depends on what colours will be included where, and what works well together to accentuate the content of the magazine.

Sketches for Front Cover Design

#1
This is the basis for one design for the front cover of a magazine. The 'Title' is positioned, vertical along the left-hand side of the page, this allow space around the right-hand & the bottom of the page for other features of the magazine. If this version was used as an outline for the final product, there would be more stories situated across the page varying in size and angle. The barcode is situated in the bottom left hand corner of the page, so it is discreet and not drawing the audiences attention away from the main elements of the page. Here would also be the place in which the Date & Price would be placed. The 'Main image' would be placed along the right-hand side of the page, significantly larger so it covers the majority of the space provided. This would then allow the stories to be positioned around the outside of the image. The 'Main Headline' for the focal story of the Magazine would be positioned, at an angle, along the bottom of the page, covering the bottom half of the focal image of the page to somewhat link the story and the image. This Headline would also be significantly larger than any other elements which would be included on the page, so it also accentuates the Main Story of the page also. Depending on the amount of space featured on the page, I would possibly place around 1 to 2 PUGs, varying in position. The colour scheme for the page would depend on the chosen theme in which I wish to pursue, but would in-definately feature at least 3 core colours.

#2
This is my second possible design for the Front cover of the magazine. This layout is similar to that of the first design but somewhat reversed and aspects such as the Title moved around. The Medium close-up of the focal image is positioned to the left-hand side of the page, covering a significant amount of the page, whilst the elements which are advertising other stories of the page are located along the right-hand side of the page. It would feature more than just 3 stories, probably around 4/5 stories, depending on the amount of space provided. Again, depending on the amount of space provided, I would try to include around 2 PUGs, varying in size. The 'Title' is positioned at the peak of the page, just below the 'Banner' which would feature the advertisement of the elements such as the 'Exclusive Features' & other elements which may be included on the inside of the Magazine. The 'Headline' of the page is mirrored to that of the first design, positioned across the bottom of the page, at a slight angle and significantly larger than the rest of the story advertisement elements. This would also include minor details of the Headline slightly above the Title of the headline, to introduce the audience more the focal story. The 'Barcode' of the Magazine is again, situated in the bottom right-hand corner of the page so it's more discreet from the Main headline.

#3
This is the 3rd possible design for the Front Cover of the Magazine. It is most desired choice of mine in which I wish to encorporate as the design of the cover, as it is completely versitile from the other 2 designs I have created. It features a medium shot of the person attributed as the focal image for the 'Main Story'. The 'Headline' for the said 'Main Story' is positioned stretching across the image, just below the shoulders, with some minor details included just below the 'Headline' to attract the reader more to the Magazine & the 'Main Headline'. The 'Title' for the Magazine is located below the 'Main Headline', written in the significantly largest Font included across the page, so it is emphasized a considerable amount more than other aspects of the page. Other elements of the page would include aselect few minor stories, which would be emphasized around the page, but away from the 'Main Headline' so it does not draw attention away from it, whilst advertising the other stories. Other elements which will be included will be the use of 'PUGs' & a 'Banner', the PUGs (around 1-2 included) being positioned in places where the reader will still be enabled to notice them without being drawn away from the 'Main Headlines' and the Magazine cover & elements themselves. Whilst the 'Banner' would be positioned maybe at a slight angle across the peak of the page, advertising other attributes such as 'Posters' & other 'Exclusives' featured inside. The 'barcode' would be situated in the top left-hand corner, smaller than other features so it is discreet and again does not draw the reader's attention too much. With this cover specifically, I would alter some of the positioning of certain aspects so they blend & work well together more than this sketch does, and so nothing becomes too dominating over other more significant elements. All depending on the colour scheme I select, will depend on what colour will be featured where. This cover is much more conspicuous & interesting than the others.
